There is a kind of tiredness that almost never gets called tiredness. It belongs to people who are doing well, and that is what makes it so hard to say out loud.
Nobody decides to become a high achiever. It is not a personality, and it is not really ambition. It is usually something that worked.
Somewhere early, doing well settled things. It made a room calmer, or a parent easier, or it bought you an afternoon of being enough. So you did it again.
In the house I grew up in, coming second was something I had to explain. Not what I had learned. Who had come first, and how many scored below me. I learned young that being alright was earned, and that it expired.
A child who learns that does not become an ambitious adult. They become an insured one.
So here is what I think it is like in your head.
Something is running a count, and it does not stop when the work stops. You are rarely in the room you are in. Part of you is already in the next one.
When something goes well it lands for an hour, then the line moves and it becomes the new baseline. You can have a year other people would envy and feel almost nothing about it.
People assume what you want is more. I have almost never found that to be true.
What you want is smaller, and harder to ask for. To sit down without paying for it later. To be inside your own life while it is happening rather than reviewing it afterwards.
Mostly, to stop bracing. You have been braced so long you stopped noticing, the way you stop hearing a fan until someone switches it off.
You are not short of information about this. What you are looking for is not another explanation. It is permission, and somewhere private enough to take it.
Why it goes on for years
Stopping has never been tested. Everything good arrived while you were pushing, so the pushing gets the credit. Easing off does not feel like rest. It feels like removing what the whole structure stands on.
And none of it looks like a problem. It looks like standards. From the outside it is indistinguishable from a life going well.
Nobody worries about you. You are the one people come to when they are worried. You have been fine so long there is no ordinary way to say that you are not.
I am not going to hand you anything to do about it today. Only this. It is not a flaw, and it is not weakness. It was a solution once, and a good one. It is simply still running, long after the thing it was solving.
