You were taught that your results come from your effort. More calls, more hours, more push. For most people it is the only lever they are ever shown.
So when the numbers dip, you add hours. And the hours come out of the one account that was funding the results in the first place.
I carried a target myself for years, in a German finance company where everything was commission and nothing was guaranteed. I know what that pressure does. The target stops being something you are working towards and becomes a ceiling you are frightened of failing to reach. You spend everything getting to it. And a frightened person under that kind of pressure does not reach it anyway.
Two kinds of advice, both half right
Here is the part that keeps people stuck, and it is not their fault. There are two worlds offering you advice, and both of them are half right.
One says look after yourself, rest, protect your energy. You hear that with forty calls still to make and it sounds like advice for people with more time than you have.
The other says hit the number, whatever it takes. You hear that and some quiet part of you already knows it is how people break.
So you move between the two. You work until you are empty, then you rest because you have collapsed, and you call that balance.
The thing underneath both of them
You have put the things that restore you at the very back of the queue, where they sit as a reward for finishing. Finish the quarter, then rest. Close the deal, then see your friends. Hit the number, then take the weekend.
The queue never empties. So the reward never arrives.
I watched this in myself for a long time before I ever saw it in anyone else. It is not a character flaw and it is not laziness in reverse. It is simply the wrong order, taught early and repeated until it feels like discipline.
There is one thing you could move to the front of the queue. It costs nothing and it takes an hour, once a month. Once a month I open a room and anyone can come and sit in it. We settle together, and then we take that steadiness and send it outward, to our cities and the people in them. That is the whole shape of it.
So the question I would leave you with is this one: what is the small thing you keep moving to the back of the queue?
